GST/HST NETFILE Access Code: Where to Find It and How to File Without a CRA Account

Updated: 3 days ago

GST/HST NETFILE access code guide for filing a GST/HST return online without a CRA account

If you want to file your GST/HST return online using the Canada Revenue Agency's GST/HST NETFILE form, you will need a 4-digit GST/HST access code.

The access code is a security key used by the CRA to authenticate you when you use certain GST/HST filing methods without being signed in to a CRA account.

🟦 KEY POINT - Your GST/HST access code generally stays the same for every filing period unless you change it.

In this guide, we'll explain where to find your GST/HST NETFILE access code, how to change it, when you need it, and how you may be able to file without one.

🔵 What Is a GST/HST NETFILE Access Code?

A GST/HST access code is a 4-digit security code used for certain electronic GST/HST filing methods.

It is separate from your:

  • Business Number (BN)

  • GST/HST program account number

  • CRA account password

  • Other CRA sign-in credentials

CRA describes the access code as a personal security key used to authenticate you when you are not signed into a CRA account.

🟨 SECURITY NOTE - Keep your GST/HST access code secure. Do not provide it to anyone who is not authorized to use it.

🔷 Does the Access Code Change Every Filing Period?

Normally, no.

CRA states that your GST/HST access code stays the same for every filing period unless you change it.

For example, if your business files GST/HST quarterly, you generally don't need to obtain a new access code every quarter.

🔵 Where Can You Find Your GST/HST Access Code?

There are several ways to find, obtain or change your GST/HST access code.

🔷 1. Find Your Access Code in Your CRA Account

Since October 2025, business owners can find their GST/HST access code directly inside their CRA account.

Follow this path:

🟩 CRA ACCOUNT PATHSign in → Business account → GST/HST → Select your RT number → View return details

Your GST/HST access code should be available with the return details.

🔷 Important for Authorized Representatives

🟨 IMPORTANT FOR ACCOUNTANTS & BOOKKEEPERS - CRA states that representatives accessing a client's account through their representative account cannot see the GST/HST access code, regardless of their authorization level.

Therefore, when the code is required, the business owner may need to retrieve it directly from their own CRA business account.

🔷 2. Check Previous CRA Mail

You may already have received your GST/HST access code from CRA.

According to CRA, you may have received an access code by mail if:

  • You previously received a GST/HST filing package by mail, or

  • You are a non-resident and received an access code when registering for GST/HST.

🟩 HELPFUL TIP - Before changing your access code, check your previous GST/HST filing correspondence. The code you need may already be there.

🔷 3. Change Your GST/HST Access Code Online

If you don't know your existing access code or would prefer to create a new one, CRA provides an online option to change it.

To use the online process, you must have filed a GST/HST return for a reporting period ending within the last three years.

You'll need your Business Number and information from a previously filed GST/HST return.

CRA requires either:

🟢 Option A: Reporting period + Line 109 (net tax) if Line 109 was not $0.00

OR

🟢 Option B: Reporting period + confirmation number if you filed the return electronically.

You can then select a new access code for your future GST/HST returns.

🟦 GOOD TO KNOW - You generally don't have to change your access code for every return. Once established, the code stays the same unless you change it.

🔷 4. Get or Change Your Access Code by Phone

If you cannot access your CRA account or use the online service, CRA also provides a telephone option.

For businesses in Canada or the United States, CRA currently lists:

☎️ 1-800-959-5525

Different contact information applies to certain northern territories and callers outside Canada or the United States.

🔵 When Do You Need a GST/HST Access Code?

You do not need the 4-digit access code for every GST/HST filing method.

🟦 GOOD TO KNOWIf you cannot find your GST/HST access code, first determine whether the filing method you intend to use actually requires one.

🔵 Can You File GST/HST Without a CRA Account?

Yes.

You can use CRA's standalone GST/HST NETFILE form without signing into a CRA account.

However, you will need your 4-digit GST/HST access code.

Before starting, have the following ready:

  • 🔹 Your 4-digit GST/HST access code

  • 🔹 Your Business Number (BN)

  • 🔹 Your reporting period's from and to dates

  • 🔹 The information required to complete your GST/HST return

🟩 QUICK ANSWERNo CRA account? → You can use standalone GST/HST NETFILE → You'll need your 4-digit access code.

🔵 How to File Using the GST/HST NETFILE Form

Once your bookkeeping and GST/HST calculations are complete, you can proceed with the online filing process.

🔷 Step 1 — Open the GST/HST NETFILE Form

Go to CRA's official GST/HST NETFILE service.

CRA — GST/HST NETFILE

🔷 Step 2 — Enter Your Filing Information

Have the following information ready:

Business Number → 4-digit access code → Reporting-period dates

You'll then proceed to the GST/HST return information.

🔷 Step 3 — Enter Your GST/HST Return Amounts

Enter the applicable amounts from your completed GST/HST return.

Depending on your situation, these may include:

  • Sales and other revenue

  • GST/HST collected or collectible

  • Eligible Input Tax Credits (ITCs)

  • Adjustments

  • Net tax

If you have no amounts to report, CRA's NETFILE form also provides an option for filing a nil return.

🔷 Step 4 — Review Your Return

Before submitting, review everything carefully.

🟩 Check:

Reporting period → Sales → GST/HST collected → ITCs → Adjustments → Net tax

Make sure the amounts agree with your accounting records.

🔷 Step 5 — Certify and Submit

Once the information is correct, complete the certification and submit your GST/HST return.

After successful submission, CRA provides a 6-digit confirmation number.

🟩 IMPORTANT — SAVE THIS NUMBER - Keep the 6-digit confirmation number with your GST/HST records. It indicates that CRA has accepted the electronic return for processing.

🔵 Does Filing Through GST/HST NETFILE Pay Your Balance?

🔴 No.

Filing your GST/HST return and paying an amount owing are separate actions.

If your GST/HST return results in a balance owing, you still need to make the required payment using an accepted CRA payment method.

🟨 IMPORTANT - GST/HST return submitted ≠ GST/HST balance paid

Receiving a NETFILE confirmation number does not, by itself, mean that your GST/HST balance has been paid.

🔵 What If You Don't Have Your GST/HST Access Code?

First, determine whether you actually need one.

🟢 If you're using standalone GST/HST NETFILE:

You need the 4-digit access code.

🔵 If you're filing inside your CRA account:

You don't need the 4-digit access code.

If you need the code but cannot find it, your options include:

1️⃣ Check your CRA business account

2️⃣ Check previous CRA correspondence

3️⃣ Change your access code online

4️⃣ Contact CRA

5️⃣ Consider another filing method that doesn't require the code

🔵 GST/HST Access Code vs. Business Number

These are not the same thing.

A GST/HST program account may look like:

123456789 RT 0001

The Business Number and RT program account identify your GST/HST account.

Your 4-digit access code is a separate security key used to authenticate you for certain filing methods.

Information

Purpose

Business Number (BN)

9-digit business identifier

GST/HST program account

BN + RT + reference number

GST/HST access code

4-digit security code

🟦 REMEMBER - Business Number ≠ GST/HST access code

When using the standalone GST/HST NETFILE form, you'll need both your Business Number and your access code.
